Step one: Which flowers should I use in my bottle?
It is best to use fully dried or pressed flowers. You may wonder why. Fresh flowers and herbs will have a higher water content. If added to oil, the water can turn the oil rancid after some time. It is best to use dried flowers for this project.
Step two: Prepare your flowers to add to your oil jar
Pick the colors you’d like to put in the jar together. We enjoyed mixing contrasting colors and similar colors. I don’t think there is a color combination that could look unappealing. Any combination you make is going to look amazing in your preserved flower jar.
Carefully snip a few of the flower stems to the length you’d like to see in your jar.
Step three: Add the flowers to the jar

Start with the flowers you’d like to see at the bottom, then add more of your flowers until the jar is full enough and you are happy with it. You can use your skewer or toothpick to carefully adjust the flowers and move them around.
Step four: Which is the best oil to use for preserving flowers?
I have found that clear mineral or baby oil works best for preserving dried flowers. This oil is transparent and allows for better viewing of the beautiful flowers we want to display. Though you can use other oils, such as cooking and vegetable oils, they tend to have a yellowish color. When compared, mineral oil also has a much longer shelf life than cooking oils.
Use your pipette or plastic syringe to carefully fill your bottle with mineral oil. This part can be very messy without the pipette, and can lead to a small grade oil spill in your home. Keep a paper towel or dishcloth close just in case.
If you have a bottle with a cork, do not fill the bottle all the way up to the top with oil. Allow some room for the cork to sit in the neck of the bottle, otherwise the oil will overflow from the bottle as you add your cork when finished – not a big deal, just messy.
Step five: Sealing your dried flowers in the jar
Seal your dried flowers in the jar by adding the cork tightly back to the top of the jar, or snugly twisting the cap back if your jar has a cap instead.
Preserving dried flowers in oil has allows us the opportunity to save some of our favorite floral beauties so we can see them every day. It’s the perfect pick me up in the winter time when bright natural colors are hard to come by.
