DIY Musical Instruments for Kids

Plastic egg shells aren’t just for Easter! Use them to make these sweet DIY musical instruments! This is a super kid friendly craft that really lets them explore different creative avenues. The little artists get to pick out the colors they’d like for their shakers, they get to choose what fillers go in to their DIY instruments. They get to decorate and then dance with their shakers! My daughter loved the shaker with pennies in it the most. We have tons more great kids crafts! Here’s a super sweet turtle project https://tengemsdiy.com/?p=207

Supplies needed for your DIY Musical Instruments:

  • Plastic egg shells – These need to be the eggs that can be opened and closed
  • Tape – Electrical tape works the best or some kind that will bend around the egg easily

Step one: Which color to choose

Kids love options! It’s great to have different colors or sizes available for them to make a decision about how their egg shaker will turn out. Decide which color is your favorite and we’ll go from there!

Step two: Filling your Exciting Egg Shakers!

We loved this part because each filler makes different sounds. Talk with your young one about what fillers might be loud and which might be quiet. There are tons of things you can put in your DIY Musical Instruments! Little crafts bells, sand, beans, beads, small rocks, pennies!

Step three: Tape them up

Here is where you’ll seal the eggs so you don’t lose any of the musical goodness all over the carpet. A moldable tape like electrical tape works really well. I found these bendy tapes in the crafts section of my local big box store. Masking tape or clear tape probably won’t do very well to hold everything together.

Step four: Decorate those eggs!

Another way to incorporate choice for your young crafters is to lay out different colored permanent markers. Lay out different stickers and bedazzlers. These sticky jewels you see here are from the dollar store and they are amazing!

Step five: Have a dance party with your DIY Musical Instruments

Your little artists made some great things, and you recycled those plastic Easter eggs so they can continue to be used! Listen to the different kinds of sound they make and enjoy the time you have together!
