This tutorial for yarn wrapped stars is amazing because it can be used in so many ways! Create a custom rustic star garland or yarn star ornaments during the holidays. These stars also make an easy and quick-clean-up kids craft and a great gift. My favorite thing about them though; they require only a few supplies. Step one: Begin creating your star decorations

Here we will create the star to wrap our yarn around. Using five popsicle sticks, lay them down and make a star. You can see in the photo here how I laid them down. I have found that by laying the popsicle sticks down like the pattern shown in the photo, the ends of the sticks sit better, creating a stronger bond with your glue.

Step two: Securing the stars

Let your glue gun warm up. If you have little ones helping with this craft, the hot glue gun can be dangerous and should only be used by a grown up.

With your popsicle stick star set up, pick up the first popsicle stick like in the photo, and glue a small amount of glue at points 1 and 2. Lay the first stick down on the glue and let it cool for a moment. Carefully glue at point 3, then 4, and then 5, allowing a moment for the glue to cool between each point. Keep your glue gun on.

Step three: Wrapping your star decorations

Begin this step by finding the end of your yarn. Lay a small amount of hot glue down anywhere on your star and carefully press the end of the yarn in to the glue. Give it a moment to cool. After your yarn feels secure, you can go ahead and begin wrapping your star. If you like a fuller, more solid look, use more yarn. If you like the way your stars look with more gaps, use less yarn. Wrap until you love the way your star looks.

If you find your yarn slipping here and there, you can secure your yarn at any point on the back of your star by placing glue down under the yarn where it is giving you trouble. Continue wrapping in that spot. For these stars, I had only one finicky star point.

Step four: Finishing your Easy Yarn Wrapped Stars!

When your star is looking amazing and you are finished, cut off the yarn. Decide which side of your yarn star ornament is the back side and glue the end of your yarn down.

Cut a smaller piece of yarn down that is long enough to tie a loop. Tie a knot and make your loop if you’d like to hang up your stars. Glue that knot to the back of your star and it’s finished!

Bonus step!!

If you’d like to turn your beautiful yarn wrapped star decorations in to garland, simply tie your stars on to a longer piece of yarn. I created a few strands of gorgeous garland for a Fourth of July celebration and they were better than any store bought decoration!
