Counting Game for Kids

This is a tutorial for how to make an exciting pizza counting game for kids! There is no better way to really get kids learning than to make it fun and enjoyable. With this project, kids can count pepperonis and match the number on their clothespin to the number of pepperonis on each slice of pizza. Adding the element of food makes this project fun and interesting. And incorporating something different in to learning helps to get the information to stick in to little growing minds.

This DIY pizza counting game for kids is easy to make, takes little investment of time and money, and can also be customized to the child’s favorite toppings. Try mushrooms or olives or dare I say – pineapple!

What you’ll need for how to make a pizza counting game for kids, and where to find the materials:

Step one: Painting your pizza

Get your paintbrush and your yellow paint. I simply put a little bit of paint on my plate and painted it until it was all yellow. Let your little pizza dry.

Step one: Drawing your slices

You can make your counting game go as high as you’d like. However, this example counts up to eight. Any more slices than that and the plate starts to get crowded with toppings to count.

First use your ruler to help guide you as you draw a straight line with your permanent marker down the middle of your plate. Draw another line going across the plate. Then draw two more lines in between your first two lines so you end with a total of 8 wedges, or slices.

Step three: Adding your toppings to count

Here is where you’ll draw your pepperonis! One pepperoni on one slice, two pepperonis on another slice, three on the next, all the way up until you end with eight on your last slice. These pepperonis will be counted later to match up with your clothespin and the corresponding number on it. I finished my pizza off by adding a crust all the way around!

Step four: Painting the pepperonis

Use your red paint here to paint the pepperonis. Let them dry! It’s looking great!

Step five: Get the clothespins ready

While you’re waiting for paint to dry, you can get the clothespins ready. This is probably the easiest part. You will use one clothespin for each slice of pizza. So if you have 8 slices of pizza, label 8 clothespins counting from 1 to 8.

After you’re finished and everything is dry, count with your young learner. Ask them to find a number. Count in order or out of order as the child picks up random clothespin numbers. You can also count aloud how many pepperonis, one pepperoni, two pepperonis, three pepperonis… and so on. The most important thing you can do while teaching your child is to make it enjoyable and interesting for them.
